Some things your CV should NOT have

Your CV is your marketing brochure through which you try to sell a commodity, ie your skills to the potential buyer ie the prospective employer. The sole purpose of your CV is to fetch you an interview call. Nothing more, nothing less.
However, creating a CV isn't as simple as just using flowery language and pretty fonts. There are certain things that put recruiters off and if you want to make a good impression, make sure you do not commit these mistakes in what is arguably the most valuable document of your job hunt.
While the rules listed are well-founded, they are not carved in stone. At times you will need to break the rules. If you want to add these things knowingly and purposefully to your CV we advise you to do that.

The points mentioned here are not listed in the order of priority; instead they are listed in the sequence in which they usually appear on a CV.

~ Colorful or glossy paper and flashy fonts: Your CV is a formal, official document. Keep it simple.

~ Resume or CV at the top : Many people tend to add headings to their CV. The usual are CV, Curriculum Vitae and Resume. Do not do this.

~ Photographs until asked: Do not add your photo to the CV until you have been asked for it. Photographs are required only for certain types of positions like models, actors etc.

~ Usage of 'I', 'My', 'He', 'She': Do not use these in your CV. Many candidates write, 'I worked as Team Leader for XYZ Company' or 'He was awarded Best Employee for the year 2007'. Instead use bullet points to list out your qualifications/ experience like: Team leader for XYZ Company from 2006-2007.

~ Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors: Proofread your CV until you are confident that it doesn't have any spelling mistakes or grammatical errors. These are big put-offs for the recruiters. Moreover, sometimes these mistakes might land you in an embarrassing situation.
A candidate who submitted his CV without proofreading it committed the mistake of wrongly spelling 'ask' as 'ass'. Now you can imagine the type of embarrassment he must have faced during the interview, when the interviewer pointed it out. These mistakes tend to convey a lazy and careless attitude to the interviewer.

~ Lies about your candidature: Do not lie about your past jobs or qualifications or anything which might have an impact on the job. You may be able to secure a job with these lies today but tomorrow you may lose it as well.

~ Abbreviations or jargon that is difficult to understand: People screening your resume usually belong to the HR department. If they do not understand what the abbreviations and jargon mean, they will simply dump your CV in the trash can. Avoid over-using such terms as far as possible.

~ Reasons for leaving last job: Leave these reasons to be discussed during the personal interview. For example, some candidates write: Reason for leaving the last job: Made redundant. Avoid making such statements in your CV, they add no value. Besides, if you do get an interview call, chances are the interviewer will address the issue.

~ Past failures or health problems: Mentioning these immediately slash your chances of getting an interview call.
For instance, you have a gap in your employment because you started your own business which did not do well. Some candidates might write -- Reason for gap in employment: Started own business which failed. Do not do this type of injustice with your job hunt at this stage of writing the CV.

~ Current or expected salary: Leave it to be discussed while negotiating the salary.

~ Irrelevant details: Leave out the details like marital status, sex, passport number, number of kids, age of kids. These are usually irrelevant for most interviewers but at times could be used as a basis for discrimination.

~ References: Do not include them until asked. In fact, it is not even required to mention the line 'Reference available on request'. If the recruiter requires a reference, he/she will ask you to bring it along for the interview.

Now that you have run through the list, take a fresh look at your CV and prune away unnecessary details and unaffordable blunders that could have cost you your dream job.

HR Challenges

HR Challenges in the Indian Software IndustryMeenakshi Gupta, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences
Software is a wealth and job creating industry, which has in just a few years, grown to US $ 1 trillion, employing millions of professionals worldwide. The Indian software industry has burgeoned, showing a nearly 50% compounded annual growth rate over the recent years. Being a knowledge-based industry, a high intellectual capital lends competitive advantage to a firm. Intellectual capital comprises human capital and intellectual assets?the latter being any created bit of knowledge or expertise. With a global explosion in market-opportunities in the IT sector, the shortage of manpower both in numbers and skills is a prime challenge for HR professionals. The related issues are varied indeed: recruitment of world-class workforce and their retention, compensation and career planning, technological obsolescence and employee turnover. This article presents some of the findings of our recent research on the HR challenges posed by the IT sector.
Workforce Retention and Motivation Retention and motivation of personnel are major HR concerns today. People?a Gartner group company specializing in management of human capital in IT organizations?has observed that the average tenure for an IT professional is less than three years. Further, the use of new technologies, the support of learning and training, and a challenging environment ranked higher than competitive pay structures as effective retention practices. Our own recent survey of 1028 software professionals from 14 Indian software companies, showed that while the professional gave importance to personal and cultural job-fit, HR managers believed that the key to retention was salary and career satisfaction. Money was a prime motivator for 'starters', but for those into their third or fourth jobs, their value-addition to the organization was more important. Monetarily, offering 'the best salaries in industry' is the minimum every company is doing, apart from performance-based bonuses, long-service awards, and stock options. Many organizations frequently conduct employee satisfaction and organization climate surveys, and are setting up Manpower Allocation Cells (MAC) to assign 'the right project to the right person'. In fact, some are even helping employees with their personal and domestic responsibilities to satisfy & motivate their workforce!
Attracting the Best Talent In a tight job market, many organizations often experience precipitous and simultaneous demands for the same kinds of professionals. In their quest for manpower, they are cajoling talent around the world. In such a seller's market, software companies are striving to understand which organizational, job, and reward factors contribute to attracting the best talent?one having the right blend of technical and person-bound skills. This would mean a knowledge of 'the tools of the trade' combined with conceptualization and communication skills, capacity for analytical and logical thinking, leadership and team building, creativity and innovation. The Indian software industry suffers from a shortage of experienced people such as systems analysts and project managers, and attracting them is a key HR challenge..More to follow....

Ford in America

Ford stance: A cut above ailing rivals
DETROIT — Here's a big challenge for Ford Motor Co. as it seeks federal aid: Avoid the stench of death that surrounds crosstown rivals General Motors and Chrysler LLC.
Ford is losing billions of dollars, and its sales have plunged nearly 21 percent this year. So executives are struggling to convince the public that Ford is Detroit's healthy company.
Ford's biggest advantage is that CEO Alan Mulally mortgaged most of the company's assets in 2006, giving it available cash of nearly $30 billion. That means that, despite losing $8.7 billion so far this year, Ford says it can survive 2009 if industrywide U.S. sales are 12.2 million.
There's more at stake for Ford than good public relations. Mulally has identified the public's skepticism as a barrier to Ford's long-term recovery.
Last week Mulally did cell-phone interviews with reporters from a Ford Escape Hybrid during his drive from Detroit to congressional hearings. He appeared on TV news shows. He visited congressional offices. His message: We've made mistakes, but we're on track now. He told lawmakers: "We are on the right path to becoming a profitable, growing company."
In his congressional testimony, Mulally frequently pointed out that Ford made money in the first quarter, and Ford is not requesting a direct loan at this time.
Rather, the company seeks a $9 billion line of credit that Mulally hopes he won't have to tap.
But Ford must continue the PR campaign to make a perception change stick with the public.
"We feel our story is unique, and we know the truth will get out," said Jim Farley, Ford's group vice president of marketing and communications.
Farley and Mulally say Ford wants to highlight product quality and new vehicles in the pipeline.
Soon after arriving from Boeing in late 2006, Mulally determined that Ford's biggest problem was the public's lack of awareness of improved Ford vehicles. Late last year he hired Farley, a star at Toyota and Lexus, to change that.
An ad campaign, "Drive One," touts Ford's quality and environmental, safety and technology credentials.
Ford points out it has been gaining share as industry sales have fallen.
Despite a company sales drop of 32.6 percent for November, the monthly market share for Ford's domestic brands came in at 15.8 percent of industry sales, a 1.6 percentage point gain from a year ago.
And Farley notes another advantage: the financial stability of Ford Motor Credit Co. Unlike GM and Chrysler, Ford Motor still works closely with its captive lender. Ford ads note that Ford Credit has money to lend.
Now Ford must convince the public that it's different. Said Farley: "This could be an opportunity for us."
